Welcome to my website.
I’m Sarah Poat and I am a watercolour artist from Devon.
Painting at Devon Open Studios
I love to celebrate the British wild flowers and plants that I find whilst walking in the countryside in South Devon and on Dartmoor. In just a short stretch of hedgerow there can be an amazing variety of colours and forms to be seen! Often I depict plants and flowers growing in their natural habit- cheek by jowl; intertwined. I also paint landscapes, natural history subjects and abstracts.
I began working in watercolour when I joined a botanical art class in 2009. In the intervening years I have continued to learn whilst raising a family and working. There is so much more still to learn- every new plant I paint needs investigating and different techniques will be explored to establish how to best illustrate it.
I have several paintings included in 'Exotic Botanical Illustration' (2012) and 'Botanical Illustration for beginners: a step-by-step guide' (2015), both written by Rosie Martin and Meriel Thurstan.
I am a member of the South West Society of Botanical Artists (SWSBA). In 2018 I exhibited as part of a SWSBA group at the RHS in London and we were awarded a silver medal for Botanical Art. I am also a member of the Eden Project Florilegium Society.
I exhibited 7 paintings at the RHS London Art and Photography Show in July 2019. My exhibition title was 'The River Dart: Moor to Sea' and illustrated a number of the plants that grow within the different habitats that the River Dart flows through from where it rises on Dartmoor to its end at Dartmouth on the coast. The habitats included bog/mire, ancient woodland, moorland, hedgerow, farmland, urban and coast. I was delighted to have been awarded an RHS silver-gilt medal.
In 2020 I designed and painted an otter sculpture for the Dartmoor National Park 'Moor Otters' project which was subsequently postponed due to Covid-19.
Dartmoor National Park has now confirmed that the Moor Otters Arts Trail is set to launch on Friday 28th May 2021 subject to Government restrictions lifting as outlined in the roadmap. The Moor Otters Trail involves 81 sculptures of otters with cubs - all designed and decorated by local and national artists- being placed around the National Park and places near Dartmoor. The trail aims to help people discover and learn more about the wild landscape of Dartmoor while raising money for its ongoing conservation. There are four trails on Dartmoor, as well as the Mayflower Trail in Plymouth.
My otter 'Mayflower' will be part of the Mayflower Trail in Plymouth commemorating 400 (401!) years since the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth to America and will be located at the Mayflower Tourist Information Centre on the Barbican in Plymouth. For more information go to: https://www.dartmoor.gov.uk/moorotters
My design incorporates mayflowers and hawthorn and a seascape with the ship on the back of the otter. Photos of Mayflower can be seen in the Projects section of my website.
I have been exhibiting with the Manaton Makers at Devon Open Studios since 2014. Unfortunately we were unable to exhibit last year in the Devon Open Studios event due to Covid. We are very much looking forward to returning to Devon Open Studios this year. The Open Studios event is being held between Saturday 11th and Sunday 26th September 2021. The Manaton Makers will be exhibiting at Manaton Parish Hall. Please see the Devon Artist Network website/ Devon Open Studios event brochure for more information about the days that we will be open nearer the time.
I sell my cards, prints and originals directly to the public during the Open Studios event in September. Alternatively, my cards are available from the Silver Lion Jewellers in Ashburton, the Village Shop in Broadhempston and the Orchard Café in Abbotskerswell. For any other enquiries please contact me directly.
If you are interested in tuition please contact me through the contact page on the website or directly by email (see below).
